Superstitions (Hate It)

Growing up, I've never really been able to whistle. This year, I finally learned how to master "the art of whistling". But, sadly this "art" will come to a stop because of my ENTIRE family.

I grew up in a superstitious family and I completely respect that. I despise the fact they believe something absurd, but I will not go against it. A couple days ago, I whistled a tune to a favorite song of mine when all of the sudden I hear, "STOP WHISTLING RIGHT NOW!!". (It was 6:30 pm, so yeah...) I immediately stopped, mostly from half shock. Being me, I'm a bit ADHD and quickly returned to whistling again by 7:00 pm. My mom continued to glare at me and soon I gathered up courage to ask her WHY it was bad to whistle at NIGHT. She simply said it attracts: SNAKES.

Being me, an animal/biology lover, I knew snakes can not hear airborne sounds, like whistling or yawning or talking. Snakes can only "hear" (more like feel) vibrations on the ground PHYSICALLY. This I tried explaining to her, but to no avail.

Superstition runs through many families, Korean, American, German, Russian, etc. But, my question is, who would believe such absurd things? I wish that people would wake up to realize that they had believed something as stupid as such. Using the example with my family, I can prove PHYSICALLY that snakes can not HEAR whistling therefore CAN NOT come and freaking bite us!

There are some countries out there (Japan, Korea, Russia, Philippines, etc.) that say whistling at night calls the devil or evil spirits. Okay, being Christian, I believe in God, therefore I also believe in the devil. However, I don't believe whistling a  melodic tune can bring the devil or "evil spirits". Do you people see what I am saying?

I am not against what you guys believe, I simply want to know why you believe it. Is there any proof you believe in such superstition? Can you prove to me that it is actual "thing"? I would really like to know what superstition you believe and what proves that it is real.

I ask that you not give me the excuse: Because my parents say it's true. or Because I have no reason.

そのような(abusurdity)はベールに包ま/マスクされて世界に生きていると信じている。
To believe such absurdity is believing in a masked/veiled world.

  1. Korea has a whole bunch of crazy superstitions. Like if you write someone's name in red ink, it supposedly kills them or means they're already dead. Now it's just rude to do so and no one really believes it, but still. People actually used to believe that stuff.
